Tom Brady may have earned himself more than two years in Tampa Bay.
After signing a two-year, $50 million deal with the Buccaneers last March that runs through the 2021 season, the 43-year-old Brady led the team to its first Super Bowl win since 2003 in one of his best seasons since 2015.
Bucs general manager Jason Licht said recently that the organization is now open to extending Brady.
“It’s a possibility. He certainly didn’t look like he slowed down any this year,” Licht said on the “Rich Eisen Show.”
“So that’s a possibility and we’ll have to see how that goes.”
Tampa Bay has a large group of free agents set to the hit the market in March, so they could extend Brady and save up to $21.8 million against the salary cap. Considering Brady has expressed his desire to play until he’s 45 – although he said he could play beyond that after the Super Bowl 2021 victory – the Buccaneers could be the team he finishes his NFL career with.
Brady’s current deal would take him through age 44.
“I talk to Tom often,” Licht said. “Probably keep that under wraps for right now, but like I said, I know — it appears that he really had a good time this year winning the Super Bowl and likes our organization, likes our coaches, likes our head coach, ownership, and we certainly love him. So usually when you have those two things going for each other it’s a match made in heaven. So we’d like to keep this going.”
How will Brady know when it’s time to retire?
“I think I’ll know when it’s time,” Brady told reporters. “I don’t know when that time will come, but I think I’ll know. I’ll understand that I gave everything I could to get to this game. You put a lot into it. I don’t think I can ever go at this game half-assed. I’ve gotta put everything into it.
“So when I put it all out there and I feel like I can’t do that anymore, I don’t feel like I can commit to the team in the way that the team needs me, then I think that’s probably time to walk away.”
